The Providence College club golf team locked up their bid to nationals with a win in New Britain, Connecticut and is officially on the #RoadtoRabbit.
The Friars traveled down to Stanley golf club this past weekend in hopes of capturing yet another victory and a nationals berth. However, they were missing one of their key assets: Coach John Conley. Conley was unable to attend the tournament due to prior obligations, but he was confident in his team. Led by the likes of Jamie Ferullo, this team just needed to play their game and they would be alright. And play their game is exactly what they did.
After a Saturday that had beautiful weather and soft greens, Providence found themselves with a 17 shot lead. Jamie Ferullo and David Szewczul led the team with 70 and 72 after the first day, and helped put their team in spot where they could finish strong on Sunday. However, Sunday was not exactly ideal golf weather. With low temperatures and high winds, the course was playing longer and more difficult than the day before. The field struggled as a whole, shooting scores in the mid to high 70s but the Friars clung to their previous lead and held on to win by 19. Although the medalist was not from the Providence team, the other top 4 players were. The fact that Providence can put 4 players in the top 5 alludes to their depth and makes them a scary opposition to any team.

David Szewczul was proud of the team after they won, and said the win spoke to who they were as a team. "With Conley away, we knew the weekend might be a little more difficult. We brought responsibility upon ourselves and pulled out a win. It was a great team building experience."
For many members of the club golf team, this will be their first trip to Nationals. Szewczul, however, has been there before. "It feels great to be going back, but we are focused on improving on our finish from last year" said Szewczul. And I can assure you he is not the only one who is hungry for more. The whole team wants to win.
Big East Champions in basketball. National Champions in cross-country. A hockey team that is ranked #4 in the preason rankings. And a club golf team that is on the #RoadtoRabbit. Winning is common place on campus, and there is no exception when it comes to golf. Providence is among the nation's best in average score per round, with a total of 374.75. They have won their last two tournaments this year in dominating fashion, but they still want more. Who says a small school from Southern New England can't make some noise on a big stage? Watch out Philadelphia, Mississipi. Providence is coming and they are coming in hot. Go Friars.
