When I was a senior at Weddington High School, I was accepted to 6 different schools but still didn't know where I wanted to go. All I knew is I wanted to play varsity golf in college. I had played golf in high school, and also on the AJGA and HJGT summer tours. With less than two months remaining before graduation, I accepted an offer from Belmont Abbey College to play on their men’s golf team.
At the time I accepted, the Belmont Abbey golf team was top 10 in NCAA Division II Rankings. It was great being able to tell people I committed to continue my golf career at a new level. However, after being there for a semester I realized the school wasn't for me. It is better to choose a school for the school and student life, rather than a sport. I realized building relationships is more important and golf will come along.
I transferred to East Carolina University and joined the club golf team on campus. I have been playing ever since, serving as the North Carolina Regional Coordinator in 2015, and qualifying for the National Championship as an individual in the Fall of 2014 and Spring of 2015.
Does your school have club golf?
Playing club golf does not require the time commitment playing NCAA varsity golf does, but the competitiveness is still there. There are phenomenal golfers across the nation that chose to play NCCGA over playing varsity golf in college. NCCGA has changed my life though the people I have met, and the opportunities they provide for student leaders. They helped start my career path into the golf industry, which is where I wanted to go. I couldn't find the right place to do so, but NCCGA has provided that opportunity. There are three words that describe NCCGA: leadership, opportunity, competitive.
