The Northern New England Regional saw a large and competitive field as 8 teams and many individuals competed in the region's first regional qualifier trying to help start their Road to Jersey.
Battling Saturday's darkness and brutal winds on day one of the tournament, University of New Hampshire (UNH) came out to a fast start taking a strong lead over the other competition thanks to a pair of 78s from Ben Whitaker and Brian Colbert. Individually, Josh Hickey of Stonehill lead the pack finishing with a two stroke lead after shooting a solid 76 in tough conditions. As the teams headed into the second round, Northeastern and Bentley tried to keep UNH close.
In round two, Northeastern looked to close in on UNH's lead led by strong efforts from Joe Iacona and Andrew Young posting 78 and 79 respectively. However, UNH was not looking back. Club president CJ Konkowski lead his team after firing the low score of the day with a 75. Along with great play from other UNH Wildcats which included four more finishes at 78, the Wildcats ran away with the trophy by posting a team 784 through two days. For tournament medalist Josh Hickey, consistent play was his key to victory as he again posted a 76 on day two.
The field will be back out this coming weekend for the regional's second regional qualifier at Merrimack Valley Golf Club in Methuen, MA with teams gunning for UNH as they try to continue the streak of national qualifying.
