The NCCGA Gulf Region kicked off the 2014 spring season at the beautiful Dancing Rabbit Golf Club in Philadelphia, Mississippi.
The first round took place on March 8th at the Oaks Course. The Oaks Course was playing 6641 yards, with a rating of 71.9, and a slope of 136. The weather was picture perfect with highs approaching the mid 70’s and not a cloud in sight. The field was composed of three Gulf Regional Schools, in which two had players competing as individuals. The first round concluded with a dominating performance by LSU team member Cody Maxwell 71 (-1), with LSU team member Matthew Moss 75 (+3), Spring Hill team member Jesse Redman 75(+3), and East Central Community College team member Taylor York 75 (+3), trailing by four strokes headed into Sunday.
The second round began early in the morning on March 9th under the exact same course conditions as the previous day. The LSU Club Golf Team came out on top to win the tournament. Cody Maxwell maintained his dominating lead to finish the day with a 74 (+2) for the first place trophy. Other notable finishes include Matthew Moss 75 81, Taylor York 75 85, Jesse Redman 75 85, Joshua Orsulak 86 75, and Jack Sippel 86 80.
The Tournament ran smoothly thanks to the support of the staff at the Dancing Rabbit Golf Club. The course was in wonderful shape, despite some slightly wet conditions due to heavy rainfall week’s prior. Despite a lost pair of Frat Goggles (Costas for you GDI’S), a driver to 7 pond, and 15 pounds of weight from walking the hilliest course in Mississippi, much was gained from Dancing Rabbit Golf Club. Looking forward to a bigger Gulf Regional Tournament in late March at the Black Bear Golf Club in the Sportsman’s paradise.
Look for interviews to follow from medalist, Cody Maxwell, and this seasons Gulf Regional medalist.
